The Church; during the Medieval era, the Catholic Church taught that art was expected to be used specifically to honor God. Medieval artists did not take credit for their work because they were supposed to be like gifts to God. However, with the rise of humanism, Renaissance artists began focusing on other, secular aspects of life like the human body. This did not make the Church happy.

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

After many years of ignorance and fear during the Middle Ages, where the "word" of the Church established what was true and what, not, and severe punishment was followed to those who contradicted or disobey what church leaders said, the Renaissance represented a new time of reason, ideas, and expression. Being that the context, the ones who were outraged by the art and ideas of the renaissance were the powerful families that controlled city-states such as the Medici in Florence, and the hierarchy of the Church that saw how their power and control over people diminished with the use of the reason and the new ideas of thinkers, scientists, and philosophers.
