Although <em>Gulliver's Travels</em> was an enormous success, the book was also heavily criticized. Critics claimed that Swift took a very unkind position towards humankind, and that this portrayal was inaccurate. They believed his comments to be harmful, inappropriate and offensive. His political allegories were also controversial, particularly among the Whig party.
