Blue sharks give live birth from 30-100 pups at a time after a lengthy pregnancy of 9-12 months. The pups are born and left immediately to fend for themselves. After 5-6 years the females mature enough to mate. After mating, it will be two years before she gives birth to pups. After giving birth, the mother will swim off and continue to have litters. Blue sharks do not live as long as other sharks. The oldest is not more than 20 years old. The general life span of a blue shark is 13 years.
