Among the English colonies in America, the general opinion was commonly against primogeniture and entail since the practice did not seem favorable to the growing population, and was unnecesary given the great availability of land to expand to westward, allowing the future generations to take over these potential new properties.

It was later in the 18th century that culture and traditions shifted in favor of primogeniture, as it seemed rather efficient to pass the legacy of large estates into the hands of one individual that would keep its integrity intact, rather than dividing the property among several heirs.

How did distance affect the city-states of ancient Greece?
Sladkaya [172]

Answer:

It made city-states ununited, since they formed independently from each other. City-States were constantly fighting and going to war with each other.

Explanation:

Since city-states had distance between them, they adopted different lifestyles from one another; their economies depended on different recourses because their terrain was different from one another (ex: states by the coast would often fish as a main source of income and food). The mountanous terrain of Greece only separated city-states further and encouraged the independent growth of city-states. This meant Greece was ununited and city-states would constantly go to war with each other.

What were the long term effects of the Lincoln-Douglas debates?
Rama09 [41]

Answer:

The Lincoln-Douglas debates are a series of public speeches between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas in the election campaign for the Senate in 1858.

Lincoln was the candidate for the Republican Party, which had only been founded four years earlier, and Douglas was again in the Democratic Party. He had already won his senate seat in the 1846 elections. The election campaign lasted from July to November 1858, and both candidates covered several thousand kilometers within Illinois. Each gave about sixty speeches and dozens of shorter, ad hoc speeches. The election campaign is evidence of the extraordinary extent of participatory democracy that the Midwest of the United States had in the last decade before the Civil War.

The campaign ended with Lincoln's defeat. On December 5, 1859, Douglas was re-elected to the Senate. In the long run, however, the debates were a success for Lincoln, because the nationwide prominence they brought to the previously little-known Illinois lawyer gave him the chance to be elected President of the United States two years later.
