Washington (1856-1915) was an African American educator and civil rights supporter that founded the Tuskegee Normal and Institute Industrial Institute in 1881 and later grew onto becoming Tuskegee University, in Alabama. He believed that African Americans had the ability and skills to be talented people. What they needed was preparation and his institute was an educational opportunity for a better life for black people.
