He Entered the Royal Institution for the Deaf in Paris, and  he was taught by Abbe Sicard and Jean Massieu who was deaf too.  in 1816, Gaulladet invited Clerc to accompany him to the United States, and they ssailed across the sea to America. When they arrived in America they worked together to establish the first permanent school for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut, which is now known as the American School for the Deaf.
