Locke's idea of a social contract states that the government is able to govern only because the people have accepted to give up some of their freedom and authority. By giving up their autonomy, the people and the government enter into an implicit contract.

This is a similar idea to that of the Founding Fathers. The Founding Fathers also believed that the government could only exist due to the acceptance of the people. If the people decided that the government no longer benefitted them, they deserved to change it, as the sovereignty of the state ultimately resides with the people.
