There are several factors that virologists use to classify viruses. Some of these factors include i) type of nucleic acid; ii) p

resence of an envelope; iii) size and shape of the virus; iv) morphology of the capsid; and v) how the virus reproduces. Lauren, a seasoned animal virologist, has started researching bacteriophages, viruses that are able to infect bacteria. While growing bacteria in the lab, Lauren notices that her samples are not growing properly. She thinks that she may have contaminated her bacterial cultures accidentally. Lauren thinks back through the process of adding the bacteria to the media--perhaps she used a flask that had not been cleaned properly, or the media were contaminated prior to use. The first thing Lauren does is visualize her culture underneath the electron microscope, a microscope powerful enough to magnify the bacteriophage if present. As soon as Lauren begins her microscopy, she notices a small organism that looks like it has a head and legs! Lauren then starts the journey of classifying this virus by recording her observations.
Think about the many factors that are used to classify viruses. In order for Lauren to determine the type of virus she may have, she needs to understand some basic concepts about how viruses are characterized.

Answer:

Correct Statements

Viruses are not capable of metabolic activity on their own; they must have a host cell to reproduce.

The genetic material of a virus can be DNA or RNA.

Viruses can have different shapes.

Capsids function to surround and protect the nucleic acid core.

The genomes of viruses are usually smaller than the genomes of bacteria.

Incorrect Statements

All viruses have both a capsid and an envelope.

Capsids are adquired from the host cell during replication or release.

The intracellular state of a virus is called a virion.

The three colors of cellophane serves as the light source for the set-up. The three colors would give different wavelengths of light to the sample in the jar. It is the independent variable in this experiment. Hope this answers the question.

Mary wants to remove a dent from a ping-pong ball without cutting into the sealed ball. she decides to put the ball in a bowl of
Misha Larkins [42]

The right option is; b. the water caused an increase in temperature of the air inside the ball and an increase in pressure.

The dent (hollow area formed by pressing or hitting) from the ping-pong ball disappeared because energy was transferred from the hot boiling water in which the ball was placed to the air inside the ball. This transferred energy will increase the temperature of the air inside the ball and the air molecules will begin to move faster with a greater force. Hence, causing an increase in pressure.

Bt corn is a genetically modified crop that contains a gene from another species. Which characteristic does this gene give the p
Angelina_Jolie [31]

The right answer is D.

The effectiveness of BT-Corn compared to conventional insecticide treatment  is very much higher:

* The plant itself produces the toxin that blocks the digestion of or target insects: the entire plant is protected where a treatment (out of neonicotinoids, very expensive and reserved to the seed treatment) allows only a protection of surface and must be renewed several times.

* The selectivity of the treatment is very superior: each variant of the BT molecule targets only a family of insects but we do not know the impact of their cumulative effects in the environment.
