Shirley Jackson�s "The Lottery" is an ironic story in that. Tessie is complaining because she was chosen. The sunny setting and is strongly misleading in the end with the villagers' dark, disturbing crime at the story's conclusion. Though Tessie is a victim, she is not necessarily better than the rest of the villagers or particularly innocent. The foolish mayor unwittingly makes a wise choice.
