B) the acquisition of California and New Mexico.

Explanation:

The U.S.- Mexican War tremendously affected the historical backdrop of the two nations. For the United States, this was the country's first remote war battled for the most part on outside domain. It included different armed forces, long supply lines, a vast scale land and/or water capable arriving of troops, and it gave the main experience of involving an outside capital and setting up a military government for an outsider populace.

Mexico had lost around 33% of its region, including almost all of present-day California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico.

The acquisition of California and New Mexico.

The American- Mexican war was important in the history of the United States as it was the first territorial expansion by the United States that added California and New Mexico to its territories. This involved the first general mobilization of U.S. Forces who had fought a remote war in a foreign land and involved extensive war preparations. In short, the Mexican American war gave the Federal forces of the United States their first experience in armed combat away from their home territory.

Further Explanation-

Mexico gained autonomy from Spain in 1821, and its northern territories comprising of California, New Mexico, and Texas were sparsely populated. The Mexican government urged American settlers to populate these regions and provide incentives for such settlements. A large number of Americans moved from the South to Mexican Texas, settling mostly near the fertile river valleys by purchasing plots of land and setting up farmlands and plantations. Alarmed at the constant flow and settlement of American settlers, the Mexican authorities were determined to reduce the incoming flow of migrants, but to no avail. The American settlers constantly tried to undermine Mexican authority, who wanted them to convert to Roman Catholicism, use the official language, Spanish, or shed their American identity. The authorities also allowed the existence of slavery. A provisional government formed in 1835, decided to forward the demands of independence from Mexico, despite military retribution. The defeat of the government forces by Sam Houston established Texas as an independent state and would remain the same for the next nine years. President Tyler prioritized the annexation of Texas, realizing American territorial interests. The American forces prepared extensively with supplies of arms and ammunition and annexed these provinces.
