What is impressment and why do the British consider it okay to impress American citizens?

History

Impressment refers to the practice of forcing seamen into service for the British Navy (primarily, although others did this).

The general thinking before the Revolution was that the colonies existed for the benefit of the Mother County (Britain) and that if the British Navy was being used to supply, support, and protect the colonies than the British Navy had the god given right to choose sailors at will. This was often accomplished by capturing drunk sailors at bars.

Which generalization is best supported by the information on this map?
Vedmedyk [2.9K]

Answer:

2). The monsoon winds influenced trade between East Africa and India.

Explanation:

As per the question, the conjecture that can most adequately be supported through the information provided by the given map would be that 'the monsoon winds affected the trade and commerce between East Africa and India.' This is because the directions of the monsoon winds determine the propelling of the trade ships to the coast. The northeast and southwest monsoon winds allow the traders to predict the right time for their trade and reduced the risk factors. Hence, option 2 is the correct answer.

What did the Mexican War mean to Americans in the mid-19th century? The answer reflects the nature and character of mid-century America itself. Americans were reaching out beyond their border. Advancements in transportation and communications technologies were dissolving the nation's geographic and cultural isolation. Commerce expanded and travel increased as interest in exploration carried Americans around the globe. The war was a "window" through which Americans saw a strange and exotic land of alien manners, customs, and attitudes. Many were convinced that America would never be the same.

pantera1 [17]

Answer:

The task of stopping Lee at Gettysburg was assigned to General George Gordon Meade.

Explanation:

Once General Robert E. Lee began his offensive against Pennsylvania on June 3, 1863, on June 28, 1863, after Major General John Reynolds refused to be called himself, Meade was appointed general of the army, just three days before the Battle of Gettysburg. At first, Meade thought of setting up a defensive line behind Pipe Creek, but accepted the recommendation from Winfield Scott Hancock that he would do better if he concentrated the troops at Gettysburg. In the face of Lee's bloody offensive in Gettysburg, he scattered his forces among the threatened federal lines, just in time to stop each of the Confederate Army chief's assaults.
