The first cause is “women had many accidents riding bicycles in their long dresses.”

The immediate short-term effect was that some women began wearing bloomers.  

The next effect was that some people feared women would begin acting like men.

As a result, shorter skirts and bloomers entered the popular culture.

The long-term effect was that the movement toward rational dress took hold.
