A dialect is a particular form of idiom which is peculiar to a specific region or a social group. In this excerpt from “Their Eyes Were Watching God “ written by Zora Neale Hurston, Tea Cake is describing Mrs Turner as follows: Mrs. Turner was a milky sort of a woman that belonged to child-bed.

In “Their Eyes Were Watching God” Zora Neale Hurston used the dialect to portray the folklore and spoken speech of a culture, the dialect includes patterns, expression and pronunciation that belong to the African-American culture in the early 20th century in the south of the country. The best example of dialect in this excerpt is “belonged to child-bed”.
