A phobia is an uncontrollable, irrational, persistent fear of a particular object, situation, or activity. This fear can be so overwhelming that a person goes to great lengths to avoid this source of fear. One reaction can be a panic attack, which is a sudden, intense fear lasting several minutes.

Phobias can be divided into specific phobias, social anxiety disorders, and agoraphobia. Specific phobias are further classified to include specific animals, natural environments, blood or injury, and specific situations. The most common are arachnophobia, snake phobia, and fear of heights. A specific phobia can be triggered by a negative experience of an object or situation in childhood.
