The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was a joint resolution that the Congress of the United States announced on 7th August 1964 and enacted on 10th August 1964. This resolution was enacted in acknowledgement to the Gulf of Tonkin conflict. This resolution has a historic significance due to the fact that it provided President Johnson with the authority of declaring the war without the consent of Congress for the use of standard military dominance in Southeast Asia. Following this resolution, the United States formally involved in the Vietnam War. The main reason why the United States involved in this war was to prevent the spread of Communism in the region.
