Porosity is the percentage or the volume of void spaces in a unit of rock.

Most sedimentary rocks are porous to a very good extent because they have spaces between them.

  • If rock has a lot of void spaces i.e porous, it will be able to take in more water after a rain storm.
  • The ground will soak in more water and the ground water system will get recharged.
  • Porosity works together with permeability to ensure flow and storage of water in the ground.
  • Permeability is the interconnectivity of the pore spaces.
  • A good porous rock like sandstone will absorbed more water during a rain storm whereas a poorly porous rock will not.
