lessy v. Ferguson was a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court issued in 1896. Because of the “separate but equal” rule, segregation was legalized in the United States. This allowed separated schools, restaurants, water fountains, bathrooms, buses, etc. to continue discriminating against nonwhite people. The places designed for people of color were often of far worse quality and definitely *not* equal, but as long as white people claimed that it was, segregation was allowed to continue without any courts interfering.
