With the advancement being made in industries in the 18th century, there was a mass migration of people from the rural areas to the cities. While in the city immigrants were forced to live in slums because housing was not affordable especially if the individuals were not of the working class. Children who grew up in these slums were known as muckers and grew up to hawk newspapers and shine shoes and they sometimes joined gangs.

Residents in the slums were poor and did menial jobs to survive. The slums were jammed with people as there was mass migration during this time.
