They forced the Indians to surrender, confined all of the Cheyenne and Sioux to reservations within five years. Crazy Horse was killed after leaving the reservation without permission in 1877. Sitting Bull was shot and killed by a Lakota policeman three years later in 1890.<span>

The Battle of the Little Bighorn was a major battle that resulted in the defeat of U.S. forces and an overwhelming victory for the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho. The battle was the most important battle in the Great Sioux War of 1876. The U.S. cavalry was under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. Of the 700 men that fought on the American side, 268 died, and 55 were severely wounded.
