The Virginia House of Burgesses was an elected representative element of the Virginia General Assembly, which in turn was the legislative body of Virginia. The House of Burgesses is the ancestor of the House of Delegates, which continues to operate in the state. The House of Burgesses was founded in 1642, making the legislature bicameral.
