Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, better known as Akbar the Great, was a mogul ruler who is considered one of the greatest rulers in the history of India.  After coming to the throne in 1556, he began a series of successful conquest campaigns that extended the Mogul Empire to much of India. Although illiterate, he was known for encouraging science and the arts, and in particular sought to establish religious tolerance among his subjects.

  • After settling the situation in the country, he expanded the state borders with conquests from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal and from the Himalayas to the Godavari River and united almost all of India, carrying
  • out administrative reforms. Created a strong central government, fostered trade and economic development. He divided the country into provinces. Free-spirited and tolerant, he sought to create a syncretic religion by connecting Islam, Brahmanism, Christianity and Zoroastrianism.
  • Although illiterate, he was a patron of the arts and sciences; introduced the art of miniature to India.
