<span>Cortés then ordered the idols of the Aztec gods in the temples to be taken down and replaced with icons of Christianity. He also announced that the temple would never again be used for human sacrifice. Human sacrifice and reports of cannibalism, common among the natives of the Aztec Empire, had been a major reason motivating Cortés and encouraging his soldiers to avoid surrender while fighting to the death.</span>

Mexico was essentially broke. The country was racked by financial instability as the war began in 1846. America's blockade of Mexican ports worsened an already difficult situation, as Mexico couldn't import and export goods, or levy taxes on imports.
