Tuber is thick underground stem, such as potato, Jerusalem artichokes, and yams for example. It usually has buds from which new plants could grow. Root vegetable examples are celery root, Yams, beets, onions, turnips, rutabagas, horseradish, carrots,  parsnips, kohlrabi, garlic,  (or celeriac),  turmeric. The root vegetables can grow underground, and has the ability of absorbing  large quantity of amount of nutrients that are present in the soil.
