After WWII the U.S. stablished as the most powerful economy of the world. There are several reasons for this to happen, one of them is the role the american industry played during and after the war. Remember that during war, American industry focused on producing armament, when the conflict ended those industries started making home appliances or cars. As a result, the gross national product jumped from about $200 thousand-million in 1940 to $300 thousand-million in 1950 to more than $500 thousand-million in 1960. This also meant a reduction of unenploiment wich lead to greater consumption.  Remember that Europe was devastaed as a result of the war, it's industry included.
