My parents seemed like a tyrant for a long time. They always tried to make me do things for them, like one time I had just got home from school and was trying to study for a test coming up and they started screaming at me for not having the house picked up, but they should’ve had it picked up before I got there. The passage clearly shows that narrator was not aware of her family's situation. She suddenly came to know the truth of their poverty. This feeling of realization that they are poor has made her emotionally week. She is not at all mentally stable to make correct decision or think positively. She has mixed feelings of helplessness, anger and hopelessness.
