Napoleon is seen as a very polarizing figure in history: On the one hand, he represented the values of the Enlightenment in his

rise to power and defending the Revolution; on the other hand, once he crowned himself as emperor, he horrified many who saw him as upholding values of the Republic. What goals did he seek to accomplish, and can you argue that there was something beyond personal gain to be achieved by him?
