The confrontation between the state of South Carolina and the Federal government over the south Carolina's attempt to declare the federal Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 as null and void is called Nullification crisis. It lasted from 1832 to 1833. It also threatened to secede from the union if the federal government tried to enforce the tariffs.

U.S President Andrew Jackson declared that the states didn't have the right to nullify the tariffs. After this Congress passed Force Bill in 1833 and authorised the federal government to collect the tariffs by using force. South Carolina's legislature cancelled the Nullification ordinance and It ended the nullification crisis.

Soon, the compromise tariff of 1833  was also passed, it  gradually lowered the tariffs over the next 10 years.
