3. In 1888, van Gogh cut off part of his ear, which he gave to a girl as a "precious gift."

Explanation:

a) A compound sentence is a sentence that has at least two independent clauses joined by a comma, semicolon or conjunction.  For example, "God is our creator, and He is the sovereign Lord of all creation."

b) A complex sentence has at least one independent clause plus at least one dependent clause.  For example, "When Brutus murdered Macbeth, he did not know that he had also murdered sleep."
