Vellum, or also known as Parchment, is a material made from calfskin whose main purpose is normally to be used as a material for writing on. Moreover, the vellum was apreciated from long centuries as a high value material due to the fact that is characterized for its higher quality, smoothness and durability. In addition, a modern version of it, called ''paper vellum'' is used nowadays and is made from synthetic plant material.
This beautiful altarpiece is by the Italian Renaissance painter Carlo Crivelli. It represents the Madonna and Child enthroned with Saint Jerome and Saint Sebastian.
