Dole declared Hawaii an independent republic. Spurred by the nationalism aroused by the Spanish-American War, the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898 at the urging of President William McKinley.
Hawaii. During that time, Hawaii was still under a monarch rule. The ruler was Queen Liliuokalani. She was the only female Regnant of Hawaii. She was imprisoned and died a few years later from a Stroke in 1917 b/c of all the stress of imprisonment and worrying about her people. During that time, she wrote a song called "Aloha Oe". She will be missed.
