Belize Beach Reef Reserve has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. It comprises over 300 kilometers of coral reef, the largest in the northern hemisphere and the world's second largest after the Great Barrier Reef. The reef extends from the Mexican border to the Guatemalan border. Outside there are three large atolls. Between the reef and the mainland is a lagoon that widens and deepens to the south. Its depth is only 2-3 meters in the north and up to 65 meters in the south.
