Based on the context, choose the words that correctly complete this excerpt from Ernest Shackleton’s memoir South!Worsley produc

ed several safety-pins from some corner of his garments and (affected/effected/afflicted/effectuated) some temporary repairs that really emphasized his general disrepair. Down we hurried, and when quite close to the station we met two small boys ten or twelve years of age. I asked these lads where the manager’s house was situated. They did not answer. They gave us one look—a (compromising/compressive/commissive/comprehensive) look that did not need to be repeated. Then they ran from us as fast as their legs would carry them.

Explain why the author might have chosen to write the last sentence:

Make an inference.
morpeh [17]

Answer:

I haven't read it so I can only guess based on what you've shown us. It sounds as though earlier on in the story, Annemarie wanted to be involved in some sort of potentially dangerous activity. Later on, I assume she witnessed someone else get hurt or realized the true danger of the activity and realized she's actually glad she isn't involved in a harmful way. The inference I can make is that her opinion on the dangerous activity, whatever it may be, has changed due to someone or something else's suffering.

This might not even be correct since I don't know what the reading is from, but I hope this at least helps you make your own inference of whatever the reading was.
