The Battle of the Coral Sea was significant in that it was the first pure carrier vs. carrier battle in Naval History.

Unlike many other naval battles where destroyers get close to each other and fire, in the Battle of the Coral Sea, carriers launched planes against each other.

This was seen as a major development in the history of Naval warfare.
