Soy is the conjugation of the verb ser for the first person singular in the simple present. The verb ser is being used here as <em>descriptions.</em> This talk about the essential qualities that describe a person or things like names, <em>nationalities, </em>physical descriptions and religions. So <em>I'm from Perú </em>and the nationality is one of my descriptions.
