It is quite possible actually... If one were to look at the reproductive tract of a female, you'll notice between the ovaries and Fallopian Tubes, there is a lack of continuity and closure, which means that sperm cells can and will actually just go out into the pelvic cavity. Ectopic pregnancies, medical emergencies which are characterized pregnancies where the fetus begin developing in elsewhere than in the uterus, and happens often in the Fallopian tubes. believe it or not some of these pregnancies develop outside the tract entirely.

Answer:

Because fallopian tubes can be damaged. When this happens, the egg is fertilized in the pelvic cavity.

Explanation:

A common pregnancy begins with a fertilized egg. Normally, the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus and is fertilized in the reproductive tract. However, in some cases egg fertilization occurs in the pelvic cavity.  When the egg is fertilized in the pelvic cavity, the gradation cannot proceed normally. The fertilized egg does not survive, and the growing fetus can destroy various maternal structures. If left untreated, there is a risk of bleeding, which can be fatal. Early treatment of this type of pregnancy can help preserve fertility.

Fallopian tube damage is a common cause that causes fertilization in the pelvic cavity. A fertilized egg can be parked in a damaged area of a tube and begin to grow there. The most common causes of fallopian tube damage include:

  • Smoking
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease, which may arise from chlamydia or gonorrhea infection
  • Inflammation and scarring of the fallopian tubes from a previous medical condition or surgery
  • Anterior ectopic pregnancy in a fallopian tube
