This could be many things, but my main thought would be Churchill's first moves were against the Japanese rather than the Germans, Which allowed Hitler/Rommel to attack some of the British reserves in Africa.

Most of them ridiculed the declaration. At the time, Women's rights weren't really thought about, and the movement seemed outrageous.
I would say the protesting peaceful because it got the word out and showed that women are as smart and equally motivated
