Basically, what he says is that it is correct that Britain has defended the colonies in the past, but that it did so only for its own gain, not for the purpose of actually defending America. What he also says is that if it weren't for Britain, its enemies wouldn't even attack America.

For example, at the beginning of the book, all the boys split up into groups, adults would stick together and work together. Another reason is at the end of the book when of group of boys set the island ON FIRE. Adults wouldn't cause a massive conflagration like that.
