This passage refers to a pair conflicts known as the Opium Wars between the British Empire and China during the 19th century.  The British had been illegally selling opium in China for years and this had created a severe addiction problem in the Chinese population.  That is why Lin Zexu attempts to persuade Queen Victoria to put a stop to the opium trade.  China lost both wars and was forced to give Britain increased trading rights.

Wagon trains were caravans of covered wagons each wagon pulled by horses. This is the type of caravan that saw used traveling the orogen trail and by other settlers moving west across the united states. Played the computer game "Oregon Trail" to get a realistic idea of what life on a Wagon Train may have been like...."Oops you died of starvation."
