Now the business owners of that day could transport them to the west faster by train then by ferry. With this many immigrants and business at the current time the economy kept growing at increasingly rapid rates. This made people trading overseas and to the west instant millionaires. As the economy boomed so did the government. They almost instantly started setting new tariffs. This made them rich. Of course the south complained about this but eventually agreed to it with a little persuasion.
