The Greenback Party was a political party group in the United States that emerged in 1876-1884, demanding that so-called greenbacks, banknotes from the Civil War, be widely released and extensively used, including in the redemption of government bonds. The group, officially called the National Party, set its own presidential candidate in the 1876, 1880 and 1884 elections and reached its peak in the 1878 election to Congress, when it gathered over a million votes and got 14 of its candidates elected to congressional representatives. After the 1884 election campaign, the party dissolved. However, many of the party's supporters went over to the Populist Party, which also ran the demand for greenbacks.
