D. This one makes sense, but there can be any woman holding note cards. <em><u>"Ready to give her speech, the woman holding her note cards stepped up to the microphone."</u></em>
I think the answer is D, he talks about his soul never being able to get back up again, that sounds hopeless. I thought maybe B, because he talks about his hopes flying based off of someone leaving him before. But, D sounds like it fits better to me.
