La hormona antidiurética es producida naturalmente en una región del cerebro denominada hipotálamo. Esta hormona ayuda a los riñones a controlar la cantidad de agua mediante su unión a receptores en células de los túbulos colectores del riñon, con lo cual facilitando la reabsorción de agua que de otro modo se perdería a través de la orina. Cuando el hipotálamo no producuce suficiente hormona antidiurética, los túbulos se vuelven impermeables al agua la cual fluye directamente a través de la orina.
