When the HMS Dreadnought was launched on February 10, 1906, the prototype for the next generation of battleships, the large combat ship, was already in use, and the first US dreadnought ship, the USS South Carolina, was just being equipped. The two oldest ships in the fleet, the USS Kearsarge and the USS Kentucky, were out of date and no longer fit for combat, and two other battleships, the USS Maine and the USS Alabama, had to be replaced in San Francisco due to technical difficulties.
