Nixon announces start of “Christmas Bombing” of North Vietnam. kicking of on December 18, 1972, American B-52s and fighter-bombers dropped over 20,000 tons of bombs on the cities of Hanoi and Haiphong. More than 1,000 Vietnamese died.

Operation Linebacker II constituted President Richard Nixon's attempt to reach sooner the end of the Vietnam War, as the growing strength of the Viet Cong resulted in heavy casualties among US ground troops.
