In the 19th century, after a long period of isolationism, China and then Japan came under pressure from the West to open to foreign trade and relations. The Industrial Revolution in Europe and the United States had created a wide gap between them and the West, leaving the two Asian nations behind technologically and military. In that period, neither of them had the power to stand up to the Western nations, and eventually both had to sign unequal treaties that forced them to open their ports and cities to foreign merchants.

japan, which is open to trade, and more open to dealing with the west on a more personal basis, and unfortunately is adopting a lot of western 'tastes', china, on the other hand, although they do some trading with the west, do it more at arm's length, is more xenophobic as a whole, and is trying to keep western ideals at bay.  here are some ideas for the essay!

The root cause of the American Civil War is perhaps the most controversial topic in American history. Even before the war was over, scholars in the North and South began to analyze and interpret the reasons behind the bloodshed.

The scholars immediately disagreed over the causes of the war and disagreement persists today. Many maintain that the primary cause of the war was the Southern states’ desire to preserve the institution of slavery. Others minimize slavery and point to other factors, such as taxation or the principle of States' Rights.

In 2011, at the outset of the sesquicentennial, a Pew Research Center poll found that Americans were significantly divided on the issue, with 48% saying the war was "mainly about states' rights," 38% saying the war was "mainly about slavery," with the remainder answering "both equally" or "neither/don't know."

d1i1m1o1n [39]
Brown v. Board of Education was a landmark case in which it was finally proven that segregation in institutions of education was highly unconstitutional, so you could say that that is the greatest effect since it made other schools become open for everyone as well.
