Through a series of steps called the immune response, the immune system attacks organisms and substances that invade body systems and cause disease.

Immunizations trick the body into believing it is under attack by an infectious agent so the body's immune system then starts to create it own defense system against the bad agent. Therefore if we are exposed to the disease for real the body already has a defense system in place to combat it. Our body has created an immunity to the disease.
