- Page 48. PERSONIFICATION " Valleys have ears". Of course, valleys don't have ears but it is implied that what is said could be listened by elves.

- Page 68. METAPHORE " Pale lamp-like eyes". Is is comparing Gollum's eyes. They were not clear, they were so pale that they resembled the light from a lamp.

- Page 212. SIMILE "It was like water in the sun, like snow under the stars..." They were refering to a stone, a white gem, that it was really beautiful.

-  Chapter 9. HYPERBOLE "Eyes as big as saucers". It is considered an exageration.

It makes readers think about how long Ellery usually takes to solve a case.
mixer [17]

It makes readers think about how long Ellery usually takes to solve a case.

Explanation:

The insistence of one person being worried and looking at the clock is that the investigators are running late and it could be due to a variety of reasons.

They could be in grave danger or there is an imminent threat of something else happening around them as they focus on this case.

The other person tells him smugly that the detective still has 28 minutes to solve the case.

This sentence insinuates that the detective usually only takes that much time to solve the case, showing the speaker's confidence in his abilities.
