One of the main reasons why English has a large variety of words, spellings and meanings is because this language has many different origins. English originated from such diverse languages as French, Anglo-Saxon and German. It has also taken many words that are from Greek or Latin origin. This great variety of influences have made the language extremely rich and complex.
