Hitler wanted an alliance with the Soviet Union because the hated that Poland cut Germany in half so in order to do that without starting a fight he signed the pact with Stalin so then that when he would take over France and Britain he would betray them and then win the war. His did not succeed after retreating from the Soviet's  and failing in operation Barbarossa
