What would be the expected effect on plants if the atmospheric CO2 concentration was doubled? What would be the expected effect

on plants if the atmospheric CO2 concentration was doubled? C4 plants would have faster growth rates; C3 plants would be minimally affected. C3 plants would have faster growth rates; C4 plants would have slower growth rates. All plants would have faster growth rates. C3 plants would have faster growth rates; C4 plants would be minimally affected.

Answer:

C3 plants would have faster growth rates; C4 plants would be minimally affected.

Explanation:

C3 and C4 pathways are the variations of dark reactions of photosynthesis present in green plants. The photosynthetic efficiency of C3 plants is reduced due to the affinity of RuBisCo enzyme for oxygen which in turn leads to the futile pathway of photorespiration. RuBisCo enzyme catalyzes the rate-limiting reaction of the C3 pathway. On the other hand, the C4 plants concentrate CO2 around RuBisCo in their bundle sheath cells of leaves to minimize photorespiration and exhibit higher rates of photosynthesis.

Increased levels of atmospheric CO2 would reduce the photorespiration in C3 plants and would allow them to fix CO2 efficiently due to the increased concentration of CO2 around the enzyme RuBisCo. The increased photosynthetic efficiency would help these plants to exhibit faster growth rates.

However, the photosynthetic rate of C4 plants is not limited by CO2 concentration as they themselves reduce photorespiration by spatial separation of primary carboxylation in mesophyll cell and CO2 fixation in bundle sheath cells. Hence, increased CO2 levels in the atmosphere would not have any impact on their photosynthetic rate and growth.

During a trip to the Galapagos Islands, which observation led Charles Darwin to suspect that organisms change over time? Island
Triss [41]

Answer:

Island finches did not have beaks of the same size and shape

Explanation:

This is the evidence of variation, and therefore proof that the finches were able to survive the selective pressure by adapting their beaks to different feeds. Therefore finches that were able to adapt adjusted their beak shapes to the selecting pressure 'feeds' in the environment, and are naturally selected, and therefore adapted and evolved with time .While those without the surviving beaks lost out.

Thus changes in selection pressure, necessitated corresponding change in the beaks shape for adaption to survive( due to variation, ) and therefore natural selection for evolution

Question: A rat approaches a piece of rotting fruit, takes a small bite, and runs away. Which statement best explains the reason
Anna [14]

Answer: See below

Explanation:

There should be another answer that can be chosen: the rat’s chemical receptors detect chemicals in the fruit that alert the rat to possible danger. Sensory receptors in the rat's whiskers respond to input about the texture of the fruit, maybe it's slimy or rancid, if if it was another factor such as the environment, it wouldn't have approached the fruit in the first place.

assess the similarities and differences between the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system
Effectus [21]

Similarities and differences are explained below

Explanation:

Differences:

somatic nervous system:

 • It is part of the peripheral nervous system associated with the voluntary control of body movements through the skeletal muscles and mediation of involuntary reflex arcs.
 • It has sensory and motor pathways.
 • It controls muscles and movement.
 • System responses are based on skeletal muscle contraction.

Autonomic nervous system:

 • The autonomic nervous system is subdivided into the sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system
 • It possesses only motor pathways.
 • It controls glands and internal organs.
 • This system works automatically, without a person's conscious effort.

Similarities between the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system:

Both have motor pathways

Both the system use nerve impulse

Both the system Weaken Myocytes

Both the system use glucose as an energy source for the muscles that they control

Both the system are controlled by the CNS

Both possess neurons

How does mitosis provide for genetic consistency in an organism and why is this important?
castortr0y [4]
Mitosis is Asexual reproduction. It promotes genetic consistency because all offspring are exactly identical to the parent, unlike meiosis where homologous chromosomes are randomly dispersed between four daughter cells. organisms that only reproduce asexually are at a disadvantage because all organisms in their population are identical so if there were to be a major environmental change, they would have less of a chance of survival compared to a population of sexually reproducing organisms that are all genetically different.

Why is pigweed so difficult to control? select all that apply. why is pigweed so difficult to control? select all that apply. th
abruzzese [7]
I believe, this is because ; the number of seeds it produces, its thick, woody stem and the number of inches it grows daily. Pigweed is generally found in gardens, cultivated or abandoned fields. It is herbaceous plant that belongs to amaranth family. In addition, it prefers areas with war climate and usually grows in gardens, orchards, fields, wastelands and areas near the roads.
